Coaching vs Counseling
Coaches focus on the present issues and look to the future while working with individuals to achieve certain goals (workplace, life, relationships, etc.). Coaching involves improving an individual’s performance and success rate in certain areas of concern.
Counselors and therapists typically focus on issues that may have stemmed from the past, which affect an individual’s life in multiple areas. Counselors provide an understanding as to “why” a problem may be occurring and are trained using the Diagnostic and Statistical Mental Disorders (DSM). Counselors are required to have a qualifying degree and have earned thousands of hours of clinical experience.
Both counselors and coaches work on specific goals and changes with an individual. Ultimately, coaching and counseling bring you closer to becoming a better version of yourself and provide solutions to some of your challenges of life. There is much overlap by taking both approaches, but the goals you have set for yourself will determine which process works best for you.
